I'm glad that this new forum has been created. I wonder why the other is being discontinued. Still, perhaps my question will get a response. Some of you may have seen my last post in the old forum. I still have an issue on that project and I suspect that there will be no cure. I have taken a short video requiring the use of chroma key. I have recorded it using the green cloth supplied by Pinnacle when I bought V23. Good light, no wrinkles etc. However, the chroma key doesn't seem to work very well, leaving a grey shadow around the object for the whole area of the screen. I can reduce the effect by tweaking the adjustments but can't get rid of it altogether. Is this like the Morph transition that doesn't work properly? and never got fixed; or is there something else I can do?

Tried a quick test here (results seemed reasonable); what seemed most critical here was to use the colour picker tool to select the exact colour of the green screen (the effect's default green is a little brighter than the Pinnacle green sheets).
By not picking the exact colour of the backdrop in my test video I could get a grey "wash" over the keyed-out parts of the chroma-keyed clip, with the clip on the track underneath partially showing through. I wonder if that is what you were seeing...?
BTW - I found using the colour picker a little fiddly as when initially applying the effect it was partially masking the green of the backdrop so it's true colour wasn't showing in the preview (so couldn't be "picked)!
Workaround: 1. Apply the StudioChromaKeyer effect to the clip (leave preset at "default" initially) 2. Turn OFF the effect by clicking the little orange dot at the top-right of the effect settings panel 3. Use the colour picker to accurately set the key colour from an "average" area of the green backdrop 4. Turn the effect back ON, then tweak the settings (here, the only big change I needed to make was to the "softness" slider - the default of 40 was a little to high for my clip; a value of 15 to 25 gave better results)

Thanks for your message. I did realise that the default green might not have been exact so I had already used the colour picker. I'm wondering if a different colour would work better , though I can't see why it would. On the particular clip it's for the object is only greyscale so I could use any colour. I'll test it and try different settings. Enclosed snapshot. Look around the clock.

On the assumption that the clock is on the green background and is chroma keyed to let the graphic of the room show through; my guess is that the chroma key is being fooled by the uneven lighting around the clock (shadows). Pushing the "smoothness" control all the way down to zero might help.
Maybe you could use a mask instead of chroma key? But you'd probably need to light the clock with a ring light on the camera to get rid of the shadows - it could end up looking more "cartoonish" and a better match for the graphic of the room?

I thought the light was really good. It was done in daylight, bright sunny, coming through a north facing window. If it were caused by the shadow around the clock, which is uneven, the chroma key would not be even all round, would it? Your assumption about green is correct to allow the background to show through. The Green is a green cloth supplied by Pinnacle when I bought V23 and I've hardly used it. I was careful to lay it out very level, on the floor, with no wrinkles etc. I'm not sure how I would use a mask to acheive the same effect. Thank you very much for your input.

I have used quite a bit of green screen for my grandchildrens videos and I have found the best option, for me, is NBFX Chroma key. It has better options than the PS option. You should find it under Editor>Effect> add-ons>NewBlue video Essentials VI Richard is right about lighting etc, I have had problems with shadows and with the best will in the world we can't set up studio conditions in our own homes that have lovely flat green screens and studio lighting!
Give it a try you might be surprised at the results Regards Yorkie

Hello Yorkie
Many thanks for that very useful information. I have tried it and it works very well although I haven't yet got rid of all the shadow, and probably won't be able to unless I re-record taking more care over light. I found the best effect to use was the last on the list, Chroma Key Pro. I was getting a water mark; but I did a bit of research and found out how to overcome that by re-installing NewBlueEffects in PS23. I still have V23 and V14 on my Editing PC. This project consists of 7 video tracks and an audio track. My PC is struggling a bit with this amount of processing. I may have to consider upgrading.

I take troublesome footage that has chroma key on it for example and just export a file from just that effect and video, then import that file back into the project at the point I need it and the hard work has already been done.It might help you if you wanted to try that.

Yes I sometimes prepare sections of video in a new project and export it into the main project. I also work on stills in Paint.net and export them into PS as .png files.
Thank you for your help.

If I remember correctly from my own sad experience, you are lucky. You need 23 for NBFX to work in 26. I went from 20 to 26 and there doesn't seem a way of getting NBFX with 23. If I get desperate, I would work in 20 to do my green screen stuff, export then finish in 26. NBFX has more options to get rid of the green screen.
